Enhancing the quality of life for older adults

The Fountain Valley Senior Center serves as a focal point where older adults receive valuable services and participate in activities which enhance dignity, support independence and self-sufficiency, and encourage involvement in the community keeping the quality of life at optimum levels and avoiding premature institutionalization.

Programs and Services

The program provides wheelchair-accessible transportation that helps facilitate independence and reduce isolation. Transportation is provided for medical/dental appointments, grocery shopping, nutrition sites, employment/education, recreation and socialization. Service destinations include the areas of Fountain Valley, eastern El Paso County, Colorado Springs and the Air Force Academy. Special outings include Calhan, Denver, Pueblo and other areas within the State of Colorado. Ridership fee is based on suggested donation, which varies according to the destinations.

Service Area

In Southern El Paso County, transportation assistance is available to eligible individuals living in Fountain, Widefield, Security, Stratmoor Valley, Stratmoor Hills, Fort Carson and south of Drennan Road. In Eastern El Paso County, transportation is available for those residing in Falcon, Ellicott, Rush, Yoder, Peyton and Calhan. For more information please call (719) 600-2643.

Eligibility

Any person age 60 and older or those who are non-elderly disabled (confined to a wheelchair) who live in Southern and Eastern El Paso County may be eligible. Other passengers younger than 60-years-old sixty are allowed to ride as caregivers or escorts of the eligible population served. Some services are available for those age 55 and older. The center serves as a meal site for Silver Key Connections Cafe, previously Golden Circle. A hot nutritious meal is served daily. Cost for the meal is based on a suggested donation.

Coffee and donuts are available to help jump start the day. The Breakfast Corner is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Frozen and/or shelf-stable meals delivered to home-bound seniors older than 60-years-old or younger than 60-years-old and disabled. Call (719) 600-2602 for more information.

Seniors at the Fountain Valley Senior Center participate in a fitness class.

Health-related programs and options include bi-weekly blood pressure checks and exercise classes such as fitness walking, seated yoga, Tai Chi, Chi Kung, modern interpretive dance and line dancing.

Fun activities are part of the regular schedule at the Fountain Valley Senior Center.

The center offers numerous ways for seniors to socialize, enjoy new activities and build friendships. Seniors are encouraged to volunteer in a variety of areas.

Indoor activities include game day, daily card games, movies, bingo and the Harmonizers singing group. The center also coordinates day trips to dinner theaters, attractions, and places of interest in the area.

Arts and craft opportunities include classes about porcelain doll making, wood carving, quilting, fiber arts such as knitting and crocheting, oil painting, and card embossing.

The center also offers educational opportunities including PILLAR classes, computer classes, AARP driver safety classes, nutrition classes, and informational presentations.

Many organizations hold special events or provide specific services at the Center. The center also serves as a venue where numerous community groups hold their meetings and other functions.

Security Public Library sponsors the Third Thursday Movie at the senior center with drinks and popcorn.

The Fountain Valley Senior Center serves as a point of contact for essential services in the community. Assistance is available in accessing economic assistance.

The Kittie Paster Thrift Shoppe sells a variety of donated items. It is usually open 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
